7 the most popular golf fields in Cambodia

Golf is a relatively new pastime in Cambodia yet is developing fast. Until the mid 1990s golf was unheard of in the country, but with its entry in to ASEAN and top Cambodian officials meeting on a regular basis with their contemporaries in the more developed golfing Asian nations such as Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand it was only a matter of time until the popularity of golf grew.

And what more could a nation ask for as a golfing ‘ambassador’ than the Prime Minister himself – yes Cambodia’s Premier Hun Sen, is an avid golf player with a handicap of 15. Phnom Penh, Cambodia's laid back capital, has 2 full scale 18-hole golf courses on its western outskirts.

Would you like to play golf? Here are the 7 the most popular golf fields in Cambodia.

1). Angkor Golf Resort

A winner of 6 major championships and 39 tournaments worldwide, the legendary Nick Faldo is widely considered to be Europe’s greatest golfer. At Angkor Golf Resort he has triumphed yet again. A classic and contemporary course; Angkor Golf Resort is his latest masterpiece and a special addition to his already growing portfolio of internationally acclaimed designed golf resorts.

2). Angkor Lake Resort Golf

The Angkor Lake Resort Golf Club is the third international standard golf course to be opened in Angkor Wat. The $150 million US dollar course took 1 year to construct and is located only 6 kilometers from the center of Siem Reap town.

The course is owned by the Korean company KTC Leisure Co. Ltd. and was designed by Kentaro Sato, the well-known Japanese golf course designer. As expected from the Korean owners, no expense has been spared making the Angkor Lake Resort Golf Club the largest Angkor Wat golf resort. Luxury villas surround the course and each are a sight to behold in their own right.

3). Cambodia Golf & Country

The first Cambodia golf course was opened in December 1996. The Cambodia Golf & Country Club is located 33 kilometers, west of Phnom Penh.

Set among 120 acres the 7000 plus yard Cambodia golf course  was designed by Japanese and Taiwanese designers and is lined by sugar palm trees, native fruit and evergreen plants, flowers and rocks.  Large and distant mountains in the background make for a relaxed day out golfing in Phnom Penh.

5). Grand Phnom Penh Golf

Grand Phnom Penh Golf Club is an integral part of Grand Phnom Penh International City, the first and largest new township development in Phnom Penh, the capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

Grand Phnom Penh Golf Course is a course which developed and designed by NICKLAUS. The Grand Phnom Penh Golf Club presents a brilliantly designed, international standard Nicklaus Design 18-hole golf course where at every hole you are constantly challenged to play and enjoy the game of golf at its very best.

6). Phokeethra Country Club

The Sofitel-managed Phokeethra Country Club, Angkor Wat, adds to the world class golf now available in Cambodia. The golf course hosted the 2009 Johnnie Walker Classic and 2010 Cambodian Open.

The location is perfect for Cambodia golf visitors as it is half way from the airport to town and reflects much having to do with Cambodian culture and history. For example between the 9th green and 10th tee is a restored 'Roluh' bridge, which is also the iconic image used in the course's logo, dating back to the 11th century Khmer empire.

7). Royal Cambodia Phnom Penh Golf

Close to the capital of Phnom Penh and only 8 kilometers from the Phnom Penh International Airport is the Royal Cambodia Phnom Penh Golf Club. The 7,075 yard golf course is spread out over 200 hectares and nestled in amongst rice paddies and coconut palms. Being so close to the capital it is a favorite with locals and expatriates.

Moreover since opening in 1999 Royal Cambodia has hosted numerous dignitaries and celebrities. In fact it is Prime Minister Hun Sen's preferred course as he got a hole-in-one at Royal Cambodia in 2004!
